SNN Presents: Vision and Development in Children with Special Needs

Eighty percent of our sensory connection to the world is through our eyes. The development of a child’s vision has far- reaching effects. While children with special needs may have perfect eyes and ocular vision, the problems sometimes lie in how the brain processes the visual signals. This is particularly relevant for children who are affected by brain injury (traumatic or infection), epilepsy and genetic conditions that affect the central nervous system. Differences in visual perception may lead to what appear as behavioural problems, specific learning difficulties, or developmental disabilities. The good news is that changes are possible in developing brains. Children’s visual perception may be improved if they are provided with appropriate visual stimulation in activities of daily life (ADLs).

Ms. Minny Tang Mei-miu, Occupational Therapist, Ebenezer School and Home for the Visually Impaired

Minny got her occupational therapist qualification in the Hong Kong Polytechnic and later her master which was specialized in developmental disabilities in the New York University in US.Currently, Minny is the Occupational Therapist of the Early Intervention Program of the Ebenezer School & Home for the Visually Impaired.

Minny has been an OT for many years. After her graduation in PolyU, Minny had the opportunities to work in different sectors spanning the medical, social & educational fields. She started to focus on paediatrics when she studied and worked in US. Thereafter, she headed up a 3-year train-the-trainers project in a children’s welfare home in China. Upon completing the project, Minny returned to HK and served preschool & school-aged children for years. To further specialize in her professional pathway, Minny has committed herself to providing services to the visually impaired since 2011.
